Install Lotus Notes on Mandriva
There are plenty of documentations on how to install Lotus Notes 8 on a Linux box (see my link list for some hints), even on unsupported platforms as Ubuntu. The only real pitfall was that Installshield needs libstdc++5 and stops with an non-useful error messages like "unable to start graphical installer" (as it does not point to the real problem).
On my Mandriva-driven notebook libstdc++5 was (implicitly) installed – surely via a prior Java SDK installation. So, only one problem might arise after the installation: if the Lotus Notes user interface uses inappropriate fonts (mine used Futura) then you have to install the package "x11-font-bh-ttf", it provides the correct fonts (Lucida font family).
So it was easy to get Lotus Notes 8 running on Mandriva :)

26. Mai 2008Hi! I also have Mandriva installed on my PC and laptop. But i can’t install Lotus Notes on Mandriva. The package libstdc++5-3.3.6-3mdk.x86_64.rpm is installed: [root@localhost IBM.Lotus.Notes.Client.Designer.8.En.Linux]# rpm -i /media/cdrom/x86_64/media/main/libstdc++5-3.3.6-3mdk.x86_64.rpm ????? libstdc++5-3.3.6-3mdk.x86_64 is already installed
But i still get “unable to start graphical installer” error. If i try option -console i still get some errors during installation and it fails.

27. Mai 2008Recently I had to install Lotus Notes on a brand new Ubuntu Linux notebook. And I also got the “unable to start graphical installer” error message, despite having libstdc++5 installed. It took me about an hour to find out, that I also had to deactivate “Compiz fusion” (the compositing window manager). After deactivating it everything worked fine. I can’t imagine, what the relation between Compiz and a misfunctioning Installshield installer might be. :-/ Later I found some hints to other workarounds http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&client=firefox-a&rls=com.mandriva%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=bmj&q=installshield+lotus+notes+compiz+ubuntu&btnG=Suche&meta=
PS: After the installation of Lotus Notes I could re-activate Compiz.
