Platz 5: Programming Perl

Der Klassiker von Larry Wall, Tom Christiansen und Jon Orwant. Mittlerweile in der 3. Auflage und auch in Deutsch zu haben. Wurde bei mir allerdings mittlerweile durch die eingebaute Dokumentation abgelöst (apt-get install perl-doc)

Platz 4: Perl Cookbook

Auch ein Klassiker von Tom Christiansen und Nathan Torkington. Eine Fundgrube voll mit Praxisbeispielen. Der Aufbau in “Problem – Lösung – Diskussion der Lösung” ist Vorbild für eine ganze Reihe weiterer “Kochbücher”. Mittlerweile auch für Perl 5.8 und in Deutsch zu haben.
Bis vor Kurzem meine Nummer 1!

Alles was man zur Objekt-orientierten Programmierung wissen will – und man wird richtig Spaß damit haben. Geschrieben von Damian Conway.

Platz 2: Testing Perl – A Developer’s Notebook

Ein tolles Buch – allererste Adresse für alle, die ihre Software auch selbst testen wollen!

Platz 1: Perl Best Practices

Das “Must have” für jeden Perl-Programmierer, geschrieben von Damian Conway.
Er kompiliert das gesammelte Erfahrungswissen der Perl-Gemeinde beim Schreiben von wiederverwendbaren Codes. Lest das!

Nachdem ich im September den Perl Aufbaukurs am ZGDV Rostock gehalten habe, ist nun wieder einmal das Seminar “Perl Grundlagen” dran (am 17. und 18.11.2008).

Wie auch beim vorangegangen Kurs werde ich auf die Kombination ActiveState Perl (Perl 5.10) sowie Eclipse setzen, diesmal mit dem Perl-Plugin E-P-I-C.

Anbei auch diesmal der PDF-Foliensatz des Kurses. Der Eclipse-Workspace mit den Übungen wird sicher folgen.

In unregelmäßigen Abständen halte ich ja am ZGDV Rostock zwei Seminare: “Perl Grundlagen” und “Perl Aufbaukurs”. Und am 18. und 19.09.2008 war es wieder mal soweit – ein “Aufbaukurs” war angesagt.

Ich hatte mich nach dem leztzten Kurs dazu entscheden, den Abschnitt “Objektorientiertes Perl in 4 Stunden” rauszunehmen und durch einen Exkurs in die Themen “Testen” und “Erstellen einer Distribution” zu ersetzen. Da mir erst wenige Tage vor dem Kurs einfiel, dass ich ein Jahr zuvor die Agenda geändert hatte, war auf den letzten Drücker ganz schön was zu tun!

Aber es hat mir wiedermal viel Spaß gemacht, “meine” Kursteilnehmer schienen auch zufrieden. Und ich hoffe, den Leuten im Kurs mit Testgetriebener Entwicklung von Perl-Modulen so richtig den Mund wässrig geredet zu haben.

Und noch etwas war neu: Statt auf das Duo “Notepad und Kommandozeile” (die Kurse finden an Windows-PCs mit ActiveState Perl statt) habe ich Eclipse mit dem Perlipse-Plugin eingesetzt. Und auch das war eine gute Entscheidung. Wenngleich ich beim nächsten Mal auf E-P-I-C setzen werde – das ist doch schon weiter in der Entwicklung und bietet mehr Funktionalität (wie man sie als Plugin- und Java-Entwickler von JDT und PDE gewohnt ist).

Anbei der PDF-Foliensatz des Kurses und der Eclipse-Workspace mit den Übungen. Versprochen ist versprochen :-)

PS: Ich gehe aus einem solchen Kurs jedes Mal mit so viel Ideen und könnte meine ganze Skriptsammlung überarbeiten … :-)

Then I felt that I didn’t get the right value (mean: wealth of information), cancelled the subscriptions and used google and friends to find the information I wanted.

Recently I discovered The Perl Review and some special editions of the Linux-Magazin. Now I have subscribed to both magazines again, bought a stack of back issues and can’t wait to get the next issue.

Some things take a bit longer till the happy end …

• It is not possible to store the individual backup files next to each other. All backups are stored in one single file (don’t think about the consequences of a single read error when opening the file) or one backup replaces the previous backup with the same file name.
• It’s not possible to define any measures to manage the space on the backup media an remove older backups depending on their age or the used space on the backup media.
• It is not  possible to define a sophisticated backup policy: only full OR incremental OR differential backups are possible.
• …

So I decided to install Perl (because Perl is my scripting language of choice) on the server and write a small script that does exactly that. It renames the backup file (originally named backup.bkf) and appends the timestamp to the file name. It also observes the free space on the backup media and deletes the oldest backups so that a certain amount of disk space is assured for the next backup run. To keep the script simple the path to the backup folder, the available disk space and the required free disk space (depending on the size of one backup file). I run this script as a "planned task" one hour before the ntbackup task will run. Its working without problems on a server for about 6 months.
